Visible Mending, Inspired by Sashiko

Give your well-loved garments new life while learning the art of visible mending, inspired by traditional Sashiko techniques. Sashiko is a Japanese hand-stitching method that uses simple, repeating patterns to reinforce fabric while adding beautiful, decorative detail. Originally used for repairing and strengthening clothing, it has evolved into a creative and expressive way to mend and personalize textiles.

In this 3.5-hour class, students will be introduced to the basics of visible mending, including essential tools, materials, and foundational hand-stitching techniques used to both repair and enhance worn pieces.

We’ll begin the first hour by focusing on how to properly prep your fabric and start your mending project, setting a strong foundation for success. During the second hour, students will practice techniques on a sampler, learning how to repair a hole using patching and decorative stitching. The remainder of the class will be dedicated to beginning your own visible mending project, with guidance and support to help you continue working on it confidently after class.

Students are required to bring an item from home to mend. This could be a clothing piece with a small hole, stain, or rip, or simply something you’d like to refresh with added visual interest and texture.

Each student will leave with a Sashiko needle, white Sashiko thread, and a stitch template to continue practicing and refining their skills at home.

This is a hand-sewing class, and no prior sewing experience is required—StitchWorks Intro/Skill 1 is not needed.

Come ready to slow down, stitch, and give new life to your favorite pieces!
